Why a “covered” bridge?

An authentic covered bridge has a purpose for its covering – and that is to protect its wooden truss support structure from the weather. The truss system supports the entire structure, including the road.

Of the several types of covered bridges I’ve displayed here, Stringer’s are not made of wood except in some foot bridges. They also support the road without putting the live load on the frame covered bridge frame. Therefor, stringers are not recognized as authentic by this photographer.
